Gus

Ohhhhh, Mr. Gus. Such a nervous wreck since the day you came home. You loved to play, but only if the other dogs were out of the room so you didn’t have to worry about getting hurt. Mom would put all three of your siblings outside so just the two of us could have play time together. Your favorite was to hide under the covers and “play-bite” hands through the blanket. If it was raining, we found you shaking in the bathtub. If a bus or a truck drove by, you’d be hiding next to the couch. For as fearful as you were, it meant you were the bravest. Every day was walking through frightening challenges for you. You and your littler-mate came home together, and for years, we have hoped it would be you who would go first. He can handle it – you, sweet sir, would be wrecked. In this way we are trying to view your passing as a kindness. We won’t have your happy snorts anymore when we come home. We won’t have to take you to the vet and hear ridiculous things like you “THINK” you have an ear infection, but, in reality, there is nothing wrong with you. We won’t feel you lumber across the room and drop your huge mass on top of our feet, content to just lay, so long as your safe people were near. These things will hurt. A lot. But we are going to remember YOU are not hurting. Every day was hard for you here. We know every day for you was better because you had all of us, and we will try very hard to remember because you have passed first, even if we are in pain, it means you will never have to feel what it’s like to live without any of us. Your worry, your fear, your instinct to cower – all gone. We imagine you running strong, proud – free of hip pain – up in the clouds, the bravest angel boy there ever was!
